Peru 2018 - Day 5 - Settling in

Day 5 in Peru.

We are settling into a routine now.
Just in time to change things up tomorrow.  : )
Today's blog will be written by Kendra and Katrina.
Enjoy their rendition of today's events.
Katrina: sorry if my blogging style is similar to my dad's.
I learned from the best? :)

Waiting for breakfast.

Cornwall homies chatting.

Morning devotions about digging deeper in our relationships with those we may come into contact today.

Thanks for leading Dianne. Great way to start the day.

Good morning Ella. Awake and ready to face the day.

A foggy morning in Peru.

Delicious breakfast once again.

Good morning Gigi. Smiling as always.

Gaela, baby of the cooks, there to greet us everyday.

Andrew's Eggs and Nutella. Gross! To each his own.
Enjoying the lack of snow and the beautiful foliage.

Ryan applying some much needed sunscreen.

Checking the hockey scores Colin?

Joycegina taking some time to catch up on her journalling.

Resting as we wait for the bus.

Interpreters praying together.

Almost ready to go.

Sheldon wants Jackie to know that he was given these peppermints by Marsha (they are actually Jackie's peppermints) because Jackie couldn't get the PROMISED salted drops to him in time.
Sheldon writes:  Thanks Mrs. Brodie for the mints! I had to take the matter into my own hands. :)

Surprising not much traffic captured in this picture.

Ron talked with Gigi on the bus ride and they discussed ministry between the Canadian churches and Gamaliel.  Lots of things to think and pray about.

Impromptu singing on the bus.

Adorable kids from the school greeting us again.

Gigi smiling again.

Juan Carlos carrying the heavy bags into the church.

Hi George.

Sheldon talking with Pastor Sergio.
He always has something wise to say.

Ron you almost missed the picture.

There you go.

Kids pointing out that Ryan missed a spot.

Turns out this wall was actually supposed to be painted yellow again. Someone must have switched the paint, oops.

Group spending time in prayer before they go out to visit with members of the community.

This wall is the right colour :)
Nice ladder Steve.

Recess time. The kids love to play around.

Teaching the 3,4 and 5 year old's about Canadian animals.

After Andrew finished a little girl said "are you finished yet?" Kids are wonderful.

Fernando's son Mateo.

Colin talking to Mateo. He is the son of a boy he met at VBS on his first trip to Peru. Wonderful to keep these relationships alive.

Andrew impersonating a squirrel.

Selfies with Colin.

Such cute smiles!

The kids are such skilled colourers!

Group photos.

More painting.

A gathering of motor taxis.

Pastor Sergio hard at work cleaning the kids washrooms.

This man does everything.

Colouring in the classroom.

Half way done painting the wall... not yellow.

Someone in Calvin hand made these quilts and dresses. They will be given to kids from the church on Sunday.

Beautiful daily view.

Sewage system of the school and church.

Katrina here. This morning I wasn't feeling very well so I ended up staying back from home visits. I had the amazing chance to talk with Pastor Sergio while Gigi translated. The entire week I've been wondering how he decided on the name Gamaliel for the school and church. Today I finally asked him that question. He told me the story which then progressed to talking about his life, my life and then he prayed for me. Afterwards he told me that he had been hoping to have a chance to talk to me this week. The Lord provided us with that chance today. I had also been praying that God would use this slump for a good outcome and He certainly answered that prayer.

After talking with Sergio, I had a chance to also talk with Gigi. She is such a wonderful woman of God and has many good things to say.

All done painting. Job well done.

Beaver impression courtesy of Andrew.

Oh never mind it wasn't done.

Touching up the front of the church.

Group one visiting Silvara in her home.

Juan Carlos likes to get in the picture too.

Group one with Gloria and Judith outside their home. We also got to meet Maria's dog Shakespeare. (Maria, from the church, is second on the left)

Andrea teaching Brenda how to square dance.

Lunch time!

Andrew wore his Toronto Maple Leafs Shirt.

Nap time

Good chats together.

Hi Ella!

Dania, Andrew and Steven fixing the church's guitars.

A good game of Pass the Pigs.

Andrea's first aid class.

Demonstrating CPR.

Joycegina taking some time to catch up on her journaling.

Guitar repair and music.

Another game of Pass the Pigs.

Andrea demonstrating the blowing technique.  : )
Afternoon siesta.

Face paint for the kids.

Colin playing catch with the taxi driver he met yesterday.

Always a busy time just before VBS.

Lori Ann's open! :)

Brother carrying his sister.

Two girls admiring their face painting.

Ella wasn't feeling the best today either so she decided to do some face painting today instead of piggy back rides. A wise decision.

Shoulder ride from Ryan.

Dianne hugging one of the children, which I think she knew.

So cute!

Colin with Mateo and his aunt.

Hey Ella.
You look happy, your new friend....

Katrina with a girl she met yesterday.

Looking for a ball to play catch with.

Ryan following the girl's orders.

He was very obedient : )

Colin the actor.

Ella, Katrina, and Kendra leading the actions with the youth from Gamaliel.

Wonderful dancers.

Juan Carlos has done a masterful job leading the songs with us.

Gigi and Dianne playing Lucas (Luke) today.

Brenda got Pastor Sergio involved in the actions as well.

He really does do everything.

Today the parable was "The persistent knocker"

Brenda putting the sleeping children to bed.

Colin knocking at his neighbour's door.

Go away Colin.

Ok fine I'll let you in.

Ask and it shall be given to you.
Seek and you shall find.
Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.

Women's bible study meeting again today.

Colouring and sharing some verses from the gospel of John.

Pastor Ron was just gazing around and noticed the sign from the church.  It looks great.

The bible verse for today.

And before we knew it VBS was over and it was time to lead the kids out.

Saying goodbye for the day.
This picture is for the Ademas. Know that we got your message, Marsha, and love was poured on Melissa who has grown into a beautiful young lady. It is so great to see her actively involved in Gamaliel's youth group. She and her peers have been amazing helpers at VBS. She and her parents look forward to seeing you again.

After a quiet bus ride home we showered and had dinner.
Our cook, Carlos, once again explained to us what we were having for dinner.

A wonderful soup.

and Rice and mashed potatoes and beef.
The food here always tastes good.

Getting crafts ready for the last day of VBS.

After dinner we gathered for a time of reflection.
I don't think it was blogged last night but we spend several minutes in prayer, calming our spirits and reflecting on the day quietly for a while.  Recalling the good things and the struggles.
Then we share some of those things together.
Some neat stories come out.

And we end our time in prayer before we move into our video blogging for the night.

The group is off to bed, except for some who are playing PIGS again.
It seems that Andrew suffered the same fate as Ron did last night and disrespected the pigs to the point he was ousted from the game.
What goes around comes around! : )

Tomorrow we will be doing marketplace evangelism and our final day of VBS.
Until then......................

Dear Kendra and Katrina:
Well done on the blog entry yesterday. Your dads must be proud. Those of us following your journey appreciate the pictures and commentary.

Dear Annette:
The cat and I are not getting along very well. I’ve had to evict her. Finally. Some peace and quiet around here.

Dear Ella:
Make sure everyone there knows about your hidden talents before you leave. You know, the ones we always have to twist your arm to perform.

I hope you all have a great day doing the Lord’s work in Pachacutec. God Bless.

John

Kendra & Katrina,

Excellent work on the blog. A nearly flawless ratio of commentary to photos. Nicely done.

Thanks especially for the way in which you highlighted and honoured Pastor Sergio in Friday's blog. I'm really glad you had a chance to connect with him, Katrina. The photo of him cleaning toilets is profound. Most North American pastors don't have that in their job description and would likely protest if they did (present writer included). That picture is a beautiful glimpse of Christ living in him.

One of the things I'm most enjoying are all the reunions and reconnections this team is making with friends made on previous trips. It speaks to the deepest value of this trip over the years. Good on all of you for the ways in which you've put such an intentional focus on that this week.

Annette and Joycegina, you both are due for a shout-out, and so I keep waiting for a photo of either of you that would make for a nice comedic segue; however, the two of you always seem to be maintaining your regal and matriarchal composure. So I think that means it's time for one of two things: either you both play a man in an upcoming Bible Story (i.e. coffee grounds beards), or better yet, time for you to lead the actions on "Loco, Loco, Loco, Loco...." I trust Pastor Ron will take this suggestion under very serious advisement.

Keep up the good work everyone. Thanks for making all of our mornings just a little more exciting.

Glad you are enjoying the mints thanks to Marsha - sorry Jackie - I guess Sheldon cannot be trusted with any candies!
Sheldon, you shouldn't steal Dianne's chair... but I adore the photo of you & Gigi "kijiji"

Hi Team,
I wasn’t going to post a comment today until I saw the picture of Dianne and Melissa. Thank you, Di! That was a great hug! I love that her family looks forward to reuniting. Certainly, we do not know what God has planned. We will meet again, maybe even here on earth. Gerry and I continue to keep them in our hearts and prayers!
Sheldon, I hope you are sharing that big bag of candy! I’ll have to bring my King peppermints to church tomorrow (and I’ll share with Jackie) since we won’t get any Excel mints from George either. :)
Colin, it makes me happy to see you with little Mateo! He’s gotten big,so quickly! Already in school!? I pray that you will also be able to connect with Fernando.
Lori Ann & Andrew, we had Jimmy’s with your kiddos this morning. Missed you! Janice says hi! Rachel has sent blogs but they didn’t post. Maybe today with Mark’s help. They’ve been watching old home videos and laughing a lot...mostly at Michael’s expense. Ha ha
Kendra and Katrina, you two did a fantastic job on this blog. I loved reading every word.
May God continue to bless each of you richly as each of you are such a blessing as well!
Love from Marsha

Me again... I’m a self-admitted spammer but I know how much these comments mean!

Ella and Katrina, sorry to hear you lovely ladies weren’t feeling well, but I want to commend you on some excellent narratives and it looks like you’re both pushing through and being your enthusiastic selves. Kudos to you! Around this time two years ago we were trying to translate cards to some of our kiddos with Israel, I think? Hope your last day of VBS is a wonderful one.

Rye, I’m very relieved to see some sunscreen in the same shot as you. I don’t wanna hear any complaints when you’re home and peeling (yuck lol). Keep up the good work, and I hope marketplace evangelism went well!

Mom, Brad might kill me for sending this, but since I’m the only one who has commented so far (*cough* best child *cough*) you should know that he thought his exam went well and time shall tell. Keep up the great work and interesting dance moves.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the wonderful contributions to the blog that several of you have made! I love reading it and seeing all those familiar places. I can almost imagine being there with you again. I can hear the Cornwall group’s jokes and all the fun. I can smell the smells as you travel on the bus. I can hear the Lima traffic. Seems we’ve been painting that white wall every trip! Great to see improvements every year, like the shaded play area in the school. That area was so hot last time I was there.
All the children are as welcoming and joyful as ever. I love seeing you all playing with them.
I appreciate all the teaching about Canada and the first aid lessons. Well done!
Enjoy your last day of VBS and let the tears flow when you have to leave tomorrow. It’s okay. It’s been a good week, I can tell!
Blessings,
Bea V.
