Peru 2018 - Day 3 - Wednesday- Getting Oriented

Day 3 -
It's 10 pm Lima Time.
Our group is fast asleep for the most part.
Being awake for almost 2 days will make one tired. : )
A great day though.
In the spirit of John's comment yesterday, Andrew will be completing today's blog.
As you read remember he's been awake for almost two days as well.  But who knows, it may work for him.
Enjoy his handiwork.
I'm off to bed too.  Whoot!!!

as usual, waiting for our luggage.

Di's going to wait this luggage out . . .
along the wall.
"George! our luggage is "orange", "blue" and "red" !!"
( . . .. "what dear?")
"I said ORANGE, BLUE and RED. . ggrrrrr"

 . . . . that's 492 . . . .ok I'm ready to go today.

Shelden is wide awake for devo's

"GiGi" our bi-annual Interpreter
(she is now nicknamed "Kijiji")

The men are ready for Devo's. Just waiting for
the women, except Andrea. (I can write that cause I'm
blogging! take that!)
Ella and Brenda . . .Brenda's praying, I think
and Ella's photo bombing, I think

uumm . . .same pic Ron. (Ron actually
copied these pics in the blog. . .not me)

We are told to finish all the water boxes
that we take with us to "Pat-cha-tu-tec" or is it
"Patch-a-tuk-chek" or is it "Pat-a-cho-tec".
I'll never know. . just keep going on the trip, you'll eventually get it.
uummm . . .never see Annette with long hair before?

So here we go again, Breakfast of champions!
Always the usual, bannanas, buns, yogourt, coffee,
juice, eggs, but this time no peanut butter!
we did "nutella" instead.

not sure why Ron took a pic of this.  . .
we all know it's "eggs".

George being  George.
(In Peru we call him Co-qui-to)

Breakfast. ("little bit of this. . .little bit of that")

It's custom at breakfast and dinner to make sure you mix it up and sit with others.

Our young girls.
This year the threesome is Ella, Katrina and Kendra.

And Carlos is back as our cook!

So it was Andrea's turn to do devo's.
So except for GiGi, we have four new interpreters.
(no Brenda isn't one of them, but she could be really good
if she did know two languages. Or is one enough Rob?)

No I'm not picking Colin's nose. I'm just catching the
sun screen. He put a bit too much on.

Not this time GiGI! Not this time!
we didn't fall for the 'ole walk to the next gate cause
we don't have the key thing!"

behind this gate is our bus.

The bus is hot and we immediately open the windows

"VIP!"

Oh Yeah! . .  Finally. Isn't he is awesome and Great!.
(Pastor Ron would have written the same thing)
BTW, that seat actually slides forward with lots of leg room. oops, shouldn't tell everyone that. maybe I should, it's awful bumpy in the back! though.

My name is "Kijiji" what's yours?
"Andrea"

So the gal in the front on the right is
"Dania" our Interpreter.

And again our fearless leader, the bus driver.

Lima traffic. Just imagine hearing lots of
different sounding horns

 . . . . cars and people. . .duh.
(remember these are Ron's pics)

 . . . cars and signs . .duh x2

If you ever get lost in the world and see this 6 pack of coke. don't worry. it's just outside the Lima Airport.

 . . .cars  and telephone poles. . .duh x3

 . . cars and tanks. . . .I can't take this anymore.

I think Ron just wants us to see what the scenery is
when are on the bus

Lots and lots of traffic!
(must be Quebec rules, no right turn on red?)

"Hanging Chickens!"

 . . ."Hanging bananas"

and as we get somewhat into an hour of the bus ride, we see these mountain ridges.

. . .oh.  ok. that's how you spell it,
"Pach-a-cu-tec"

When we gazed at these pics, the bus got quiet.
Like always, these pics don't do justice. If I can somewhat explain it, you need a really really really wide lens.

Getter closer to Gamaliel Church.

Huh? Cows?

Everyone on the bus was still quiet. I'm sure we all wondered what is to become of this day. What does the Lord have in store for each of us.

One more street and it Church time!

As usual the kids were out front. Lots of them!

We got the biggest cheer from them. there were alot of young kids!
I'm pretty sure our newbie "Steve"  couldn't believe the attention we got when we arrived.

yes, there were lots of kids. in front as well as around the corner too!

they didn't stop yelling!
lots of joy.
This is Neftali.  He's a teacher and youth pastor.

We all shared hugs.
Lots of new faces to know!
Pastor Sergio.
(he's got a haircut and looks alot younger)

so we all packed the church and the kids sang us a song.
(there was  a few tears among us)

And they made a poster for us again.

That's me in the center. I must admit, I had a tear in my eye, but I was trying to fake that I had sunscreen in my eye.

this place was rockin'

Man these kids are cute!

A few words by one of the students to us.

off to class.

A home visit.
That's our other interpreter, first gal on the left, "Ynes"
Walking through the streets.

Another home visit.

Ok. This is my team. We had construction today.
We had to sand this entire white wall.
(Ron is in our team, but he left and didn't come back, so the three of us finished the wall ourselves)

Goofy Brenda.

Working Brenda.

This is "Joselin". Another interpreter.

GiGi and Sergio. (I think doing thier devo's.)

Remember that movie . . .aahh what was it called again,
oh yeah . . ."Twins". yeah, that's it, "Twins.
NOT!

One of the other things we are doing this year is going into the classrooms and teaching the kids a little bit about Canada.

That's Ryan and Andrea telling the kids
that Canada is a great place!

Lori Ann is helping a fellow glue red stuff
on either side of our flag.

Canada eh?

the kids are making our Flag.

(Ryan thinks he's a teacher)

Not bad Ryan!

The map of Canada

Did you know that Peru' flag looks similar
Canada's Flag?

Cool flags!
Ok. For those who know the grounds of Gamilel Church, this is the new playground. It's in the place of where we use to dump our construction materials.  Pretty good eh!?
That's Brenda and myself, we jumped into this game because we are just big kids at heart.

Lunchtime!

Pick a spot, chat and eat.

My head was pounding at lunch. 2 hours of sleep. That's why I look dazed and confused.
GiGi (Interpreter)
Dania (Interpreter)
Lori Ann and Brenda
(this two birds are actually in the same room,
time will tell, Stayed tuned)

Annette and Steve.

The girls!

Joselin ("Jose" Interpreter)

Juan Carlos (Interpreter)

Ynes (Interpreter)
Mother and Daughter catching up.
Dianne and Jose.
Steve taking a nap at lunch. (I usually do this too at lunch. the concrete floor is actually a bit cool)

Lori Ann.
(Since I'm your husband,
I'm the only one that gets to spell your name right!)

"I need someone to carry the water"

Brenda is always faithful at doing journal-ling

New playground area (old dump)

the washrooms. (A bit spiffier)

Classrooms.

and the classrooms other way.

Annette and Lori Ann enjoying some R & R.

Joselin and Neftali.

So in the afternoon it's VBS!
(Remember that Superman Song . .Juan Carlos is awesome at the actions)
And that ol' favorite. "Face Painting"

Picking what to face paint . . .

ok. Hold still . . .right Kendra.

Joycejenna has a go at face painting too! what an artist!
. . .one more finishing touch . .

getting ready to play outside.

just a random pic of Ella.

ok. Ron.  That's three pics of your wife face painting.
I get it.
These swirly things are a hit before VBS.

"Don't do it Ella, don't do it. . . .once you let one on
THEY ALL WANT ON !

oh well . .

Again, for those who know the Gamileil Church grounds, they installed a mound of dirt in front of the church for those rick-shaw guys/carts (i'm not doing spell check on that, too bad)

Sergio, Colin and Juan Carlo talking about something.(Probably something behind Ron's back)

Ok. So this is our soccer (football) field. Again, that new mound of dirt is sort of in our way). OK. I admit, soccer (football) is a universal beautiful game. Everyone can play anytime. (too bad there wasn't ice all year long!)

"Sisters!"

"Skipping!"

"Football" (or is that soccer?)

A couple of Pachacutecians.

So a bunch of us got up and awkwardly did the actions again!
"I'm a Soldier in the Army of God!"

Yeah. . .I'm a Soldier in the Army of God!"
Juan Carlos was awesome at the songs
and firing up the kids

Again, these kids are cut and beautiful!
Katrina says "I'll take that kid Ella".
follow along kids!
we were all getting really really sweaty! Juan Carlos put us through a work-out
Women's Group (13 women!)
GiGi and Di prepping for the vbs.
Katrina being swarmed by kids. . .

And the our closing ritual. Follow the leader (Brenda) and get escorted out the front doors to close vbs.

"Choo choo" under the train.
See everyone tomorrow!

Getting ready for supper at the hostile.

We invited Sergio, his wife and daughter and
Neftali to join us

ok. He's a cool guy. I must admit.

I think Sergio's hair cut looks alot better than Ron's hair.

so we had soup . .
and Carlos' famous chicken on rice.

After dinner we all got together to exchange encouragement. The Holy Spirit moved us all tonight.

We all got a chance to express how much of a family it has been over the years.

We all laid hands on Sergio and fam. and Neftali.
It was very very moving.
We had gifts to give Sergio. Here are some custom wood crafted candles (made by CRC member of Calvin). Sergio loved them!

A new laptop for Neftali!
and Sheldan made this cool sort of shining / glimmering painting of a fawn for Sergio.

So, it was a great day for all! Tomorrow we do it again.

Before bed, we did get a chance to get a couple "Pass the Pigs" games in.
Grumpy Ron had to scold us for yelling "Sooowwwieee" a bit to loud. He does need his beauty sleep.
Over and out. Andrew B.

Good morning! This comment is designated specifically for Sheldon, as per my instructions haha. I was so excited to wake up and see the pics from your first day back, and I can’t believe how beautiful your artwork piece is! I hope you absorbed all parts of today and that you either were able to reunite with some old faces or meet some new ones... or a bit of both :) looking forward to some more pics of what mischief you get up to this week (yeah, I know, you’re not as innocent as you let on hahah).

Aaaand this comment is for the rest of the group! Just wanted to say that it looks like despite a bit of a French twist to the start of the trip that everyone seems to really have hit the floor running! And speaking of floors, I can’t get over the new playground! Thank goodness Andrew explained what we were looking at in that photo, otherwise I’d have been puzzling most of today. The covers by the classroom look awesome too.

Mom, I hope you had a wonderful first day, and I’m glad to see you’ve been journaling away. I look forward to that account because we all know how your memory is when you’ve been busy haha. Just kidding... but maybe keep up with that journal anyways? Cornwall ladies, I hope you’re behaving in your room this year.

Ryan, I have to say that I am already learning new things about you from the photos... mostly pertaining to your dancing skills (who knew?!) up on that stage. When there’s a smaller group, there’s no holding back, I guess! I hope whatever you got up to in the morning was fruitful and that you are taking it all in. I’m really proud of you, and this whole group at large.

So does a smaller group mean that everyone gets some yogurt in the morning? This is my biggest question. Maybe time will tell! Have a great day everyone, God bless you all!

Hey everyone,

If you're wondering if I'm actually going to post a comment everyday, the answer is yes because someone made it VERY clear that she would love to hear from Steven and I everyday (and we all know that Steven isn't posting comments!! Anyways, I must say that Andrew your comments are rather funny, I had a laugh! The new playground looks amazing, so many changes since the first time Immanuel went to Peru. I'm sure that a day with the kids added some pep to everyone's step, enjoy all the love! Brenda, do not go wandering off again. If you do I think you might make my mom go crazy, she has a promise to keep you know ;)

Love you and miss you Mom and Dad xo

Lovely pics, great commentary.
So, um, just wondering about George's nickname of "Co-qui-to"... Maybe you meant "Poquito" which would be something like "Little Guy", and yeah that fits George. But Co-qui-to is closer to Coqueto which is "Flirtatious". I think George has some 'splaining to do.

Hey Andrew:
Thanks for your blog-writing. Not an easy task to add comments to all 153 pictures that Ron uploaded.
And you're really putting yourself out there. There's no telling what kind of comments will come from the peanut gallery.
I was pleased to see that Ron passed along his love for the ellipsis to you. Yeah, that's an advanced literary device that not everyone can master.
Now let's be honest for a moment here. When Ron handed you the laptop to do the blog, did you check the hockey scores?

But seriously. Nice job. Thanks for sharing your day with us. I feel like I was there. Some very familiar people and routines. I hope you've all had some rest and are ready for the challenge today.

Your pal,
John

Hey everyone,
Love the pics and the commentary. Great job, Andrew! Ron, you must have enjoyed getting some sleep, unlike years in the past!
So good to see everyone back in Pach-e-cu-Tec! Live seeing all of the familiar faces and lots of new ones. Like any strong relationship, it’s neat to see how being apart for 2 years doesn’t change things. Lots of love there! The Canadian flags look great! Our Gems CITs will be so happy to see that they were put to good use! Ryan, who knew you had such moves!? How fun! Lori Ann, I haven’t seen any braids yet...you’ve got untapped talents there! Girls, she’s amazing. Early morning appointments with her for a hairdo, and a chat are the best! Your group devotion time sounds deep and moving. I’m looking forward to hearing more when you guys return. I can actually feel the love of the Spirit through your words and pictures. So cool! It’s early in the week, God’s still got lots in store for each of you. Be open, serve with your whole heart. You all have so much to give! Love and prayers, from Marsha

Hey everyone, for some reason I don't see my comment from yesterday. I guess its because I have been replaced with a new "Steve". Whats up with that? Hopefully this one makes it. I am really missing not being there with you guys. I am sorry Dianne, it seems you took my place as being the sick one! At least you guys will be able to sleep now without me there, so thats a plus. Praying for all you guys! God Bless
Pastor Steve

Herman and susie are here to look at the pictures too and they want to say hi, Herman says you have to bring back the good weather with you, cause we don't like all the snow! Susie says "I hope you enjoy the blankets I made, and I wish I was there with you guys! Hope you come home safe."

Sorry I'm late to the party. I tried commenting yesterday and it apparently didn't work. Yes Ron, even this technology is tricky for me.

Cudos to all of you for handling the travel delay as graciously as you did. It looks as though everyone mustered a healthy dose of holy flexibility.

Andrew, George, Sheldon and Colin, I'm a little shocked to see Pastor Ron playing Pigs and I'm wondering what kind of penance you required of him after years of his flagrant disrespect for the pigs. I seem to remember him strongly implying that it's frivolous and silly to roll plastic pigs across a table top. I'm glad to see him come around, but seriously, the pigs don't forget. #letitride

It's so rich to see you all having a great time...being blessed by and being a blessing to our Peruvian family. Lather them in all of our love as well. And Ella and Katrina...I hope your insatiable curiosity is producing a steady stream of excellent questions each day.

Looking forward to more photos.

Finally figured out how to leave a comment! Have been following you guys each day and George and I are praying for you all. Fun and informative posts! Good job, Andrew, although you did look the worse for wear! As someone commented, it feels like we are there with you. And we are in spirit. Love you all and are looking forward to hearing much much more when you get back. Our love to the Pachecutecians!
