Helping out at the Ottawa FoodBank

This past year it has been our desire as a youth ministry to not just sit in our church building and learn about God, but to get out and work in our community as well. This past Tuesday we took some time with our Senior youth group and helped sort food at the Ottawa Food Bank.
We began the evening with a short orientation time from a staff worker at the Food Bank. A very nice lady who helped us make the evening run smoothly.
Kevin and I (once I finished taking the pictures) took the food out of the bins and placed it on the tables for the others to sort and box.
As usual, Ken and Janine worked very hard as Youth Leaders.
Yes Leah, Mac and cheese goes into that box : ) .
I don't think Megan liked something she was packing. Looks like she's saying, "I'm not touching THAT!"
Janine looked a little camera shy in this picture......
THAT'S Better Janine. Hey get to work Janine.....Jonah is working MUCH harder than you are.
I must say we all learned a great deal about food items we never thought existed. Take this Bowel Buddy Bran Wafer's package. On the bottom is says "The permanent solution to flushing." I kid you not! : )
We managed to sort 4000 lbs of food this evening. Quite a feat for a group our size, so said the staff person. She gave us a short tour of the building. Seems they have just reorganized their shelving and have a new freezer as well.
It was lots of fun sorting food (catch David!) but it was also satisfying knowing that we helped in the process of feeding those in Ottawa who come to the food banks of our city.
Below are some videos of our time together.
