SERVE 2012 - Day 4 - Monday - Work sites

Day 4.  Monday.  To start off with, I wanted to thank Fayth and Niesje for doing the blog yesterday.  It allowed me to get some badly needed sleep, and they did a great job doing it.

Two points though....Fayth, you say "curve ball"  not "ball curve".  Also, you mysteriously didn't comment on the picture of Joycegina......hmmmmm.....

Today, however I think I won't be getting much sleep.

I sorted through over 700 pictures today from Chris and Fontana.  WOW.  I've tried to whittle it down to 150 ish, and I won't be commenting on all of them today, but you should get an idea of our day from them.

So.....here we go.......

This morning I must have really enjoyed the night off, because I got the starting of the day wrong.  We were supposed to each at 8 am, and I told everyone 8:30 am.  I got out of bed at 7:55, feeling rested and ready to face the day.

Anne and Annet looked a wee bit frustrated..and I couldn't figure out why.  I found out why, and had to get everyone moving faster than I would have liked...but it all worked out.

Hannah not feeling very photogenic today....Tyler was ok.

Breakfast line.  French toast and sausages.

Yes Lucy, it's SYRUP!!!

Justin, Steven and Chris.

Megan was away from us for a day due to illness.  She's back and feeling much better.  Carolyn REALLY missed her and was VERY happy to have her back, as were we.  : )

Sarah, Rebecca and Charlotte enjoying breakfast.

Annette does morning devotions for us each morning. Today Jovita shared a story of faith with us.

Lucy being.....Lucy.

Janine and Harold with their Schedules that help keep us on time  (when I read them of course.)

Nick and Margaret helping in the kitchen.

Annette showed us how to Anoint ourselves with oil.

Lucy and Tyler practicing.

John doing this to Joanna.  It was nice to learn how to  do this with each other.

I'm learning to look at my schedule now.

Today we started working at various places in Ottawa.  My crew went to Jericho Road - Crerar.  They worked hard.

They cleaned out a food cabinet.

Steven helping take down stuff from the pantry...or is that put stuff up....hmmmm

They later moved to the basement to clean doors...

 and baseboards.

The finished product.

We also went to the food bank.

Alex and Jonathan sorting food.

What's in the bag Alex?  Always a surprise.

Kristen helping to pack boxes.

Jonathan and Shawn waiting for more food to sort.

Annette trying to read the label on the can....admit it Annette, you NEED your glasses.......

Another group went to Jericho road - Springhurst.  Taurie helping to clean up the kitchen.

Jovita enjoying cleaning the windows.

Rachael and Janine talking about what to do next.

Jovita and Rachael inspecting their work.

 Leah and Jovita washing windows.

Rachael cleaning the cabinets.

Apparently Leah doesn't like dirt.

Another group went to THE MISSION and prepared and served lunch.

Carolyn making butter containers.

Megan put the butter in the cups, not your hand.

Harold has been volunteering for years at the mission.

Joy smiling as usual.

The crew ready to serve lunch.

Joy is serenading the group.  : )

Another group went to Starwood Extendicare visit with the residence.

They helped serve the residence coffee and tea.

John and Fontana having some fun.

John helping through the balloon around.

Another group went to Redeemer Christian high school.  Here's Zack taking a break from weeding gardens.

Amy looks warm after a good morning work.

Megan H working among the Hostas.  (If that's how you spell them).

We went to a couple of more places, and they will be pictured tomorrow.  After work sites, it was back to church for lunch.

Sandwiches....and it looks like Sara is ready to eat.

It looks like someone told Tyler a good joke.

Carolyn digging in.

Kyle enjoying lunch.

Fayth, who keeps taking these pictures of you...b/c it's not me.   bahahahah!!!!!

Interesting Fontana.

After Lunch it was time for mission Time.  Kyle and Ailene working through the material.

Taurie getting into small group time.

Alex, always smiling.

John and Rosy....they have been really fun to watch this week.  They get along fabulously.

One of the 4 small groups we have each afternoon.

Willi working through the material.

Tyler and Fontana having a pensive moment.

This is one of the crafts made during Mission Time.  Each Mission Time, something is made.  Bea and Grace are AMAZING in planning all this.

Megan H gluing something.

Charlotte working hard....

Justin and Steven working hard.

The end product.

After Mission Time it was time for showers, and then we went indoor glow in the dark golfing.  Always a highlight.  Now, I could comment on all these pictures, but there were 200 of Golfing alone, so I've reduced the number, and will comment on a couple.

This is one worth a comment.  Steven loves to do Rock, Paper, Scissors.   He plays it with Justin and Chris all day long....he usually wins too.

Amy word the greatest socks for glow in the dark.

See, the creativity of John and Rosy.  Both great senses of humour.

Here I am taking some indoor video.  Me and Larry are having a great time. :  )

How do you stand up and play golf posing like that Carissa?

Chris is so bashfull.....

Mentor and Participant.  Nice picture.

Rosy is a self admitted lousy golfer.
But, she didn't do badly.

Megan D.  DEFINITELY  feeling better.

After golf some of the crew tried some games while waiting.

Here they are really getting into the dance game..off the ground and everything.

Willi and I talking about something.  It looks like we are saying the exact same thing.

After Golfing it was back home and time to relax before dinner.  My wife, Joycegina, who is helping in the kitchen after dinner, and Graham decided to tackle a puzzle.

Others took to playing cards.

Tyler and Charlotte having a conversation together.

Rey and Harold catching up on things.

Justin, being....weird....  : ) But I should say that Justin, you are an amazing Mentor.  I'm glad you decided to come last minute to SERVE.  You have been a great asset to the team.  Thanks for being you.

It seems that the puzzle is drawing a crowd.

We had supper, but Fontana was busy or something (probably downloading all those pics) so no pics of supper today.  We had worship next.  Sarah and Hannah have done a wonderful job of leading the singing.

Fayth is an amazing and gifted piano player.

The Participants just LOVE worship time.  Sara in enjoying the music and praising God through song.

Some Mentors doing actions to the songs.

And then it was time for Shellie to lead us through another Mission Time.

Time to dress up another participant.  Willi was the "willing" participant this time.

He looks pretty good.  : )

Shellie did some fun things with the gloves.

Shellie used my head as an example of how small we can make things with our thumb and finger.  Everyone else tried to do the same.  : )

My turn to get the lessons moving.

Steven getting his tools to get the telescope working.

Here is Steven manipulating the telescope so we can see pictures of space.

Trying to find a speck of pink sparkles in this container of sparkles.  Impossible........

Hooking up Sara to the computer......she was ok mom and dad.....   : )

Closing out the evening and giving Shellie a passing grade so she can move on to advanced training.

A final song after Shellie's time.

After worship time it was time for a movie (UP this time) or sports or a craft.

Jovita wanted to throw the football.

Joy V and others wanted to play basketball.

Willi wanted to throw the Frisbee he got as part of his prayer partner warm fuzzies....

Leah playing football passing as well.

Apparently they caught 100 passes between them.

Rey taking some time out to play before everyone went to bed.

Kyle and Ailene ready to watch the movie.

Hannah and Tyler making tonight's craft.

Niesje helping Amy with her craft.

Jovita wanted to show some of us a YOUtube video of a choir she's going to be in when Parliament opens in the fall...... pretty awesome.

Of course, Leah got Alex going with different faces....nothing new in our youth group.

Seems it was catchy.....

Chris with the final product.

Justin with the final product.

Joy K with the final product.

Bea surveying all the crafts.  A look of pride on her face and rightly deserved.

Charlotte finishing off her craft.

Well end the evening with ME!   Looking tired, but very happy with how the day went. It's 1:09 am, and Annette and Shellie have been sharing life with me as I'm blogging  (so if certain things don't make sense, you'll understand hopefully).

I just wanted to end today by re telling what I told our Mentors tonight:  I couldn't write enough warm fuzzies to you all because you are so amazing.  I love watching you grow and get to know your Participants and work through some difficult issues with them a times.  I love our evening sessions in which we can laugh and joke about the days antics  (and there are many). I am so proud of all of you, and you should know that God loves what you are doing, no matter your reasons.  You have been a blessing, and have been blessed.

Time for bed now......see you tomorrow night........
