Winnipeg SERVE Day 8 - Work site Day etc.

Day 8

A HOT day in Winterpeg, but a good day.  It's 11:45 and I'm just getting to writing on the blog, and my editor's have all gone to bed, so forgive me in advance if there are some spelling mistakes to day, or as Jacob would say, misuse of my commas.  : )

I'll be making the comments short again, with maybe a few things to say, and then Hannah will end the blog with her thoughts of today.  Enjoy.....

So, let's begin with last night.  Debbie, a good friend of mine, decided to bring along a scrap book from our youth group days of 30 years ago.  I look much better now than then, but it was interesting to see the large glasses and funky hair.  My youth loved seeing me younger...even Chris hasn't seen me that young before I don't think.

Amy and Leah found a cot and used it for a go cart.

That brings us to this morning.  Time for a coffee.  Good morning Kyle.

Everyone makes their way to the warm fuzzy table to see who's said nice things to them.  I even found a couple this morning.

Kyle and Kayla talking with Bonita about the day.

Joanna's still smiling.  She's getting to know more of the participants this year, due to her not having a participant.  For her this has been a different SERVE experience, but a good one still.

Good morning Jerry.  Hope you had a wonderful sleep.

Jovita ready to face the day.

Kim ready to face the day.

The three amigo's serving us breakfast again.  I heard from them about the accident in Ottawa at the concert.  We haven't watched the news in a week, so we have no idea what's been happening out in Ottawa.

Kayla and Amber waking up.

One of our night hawks who stayed up all night.  She's still smiling.

Breakfast is served once again.  Pancakes and sausage.  You see Jacob stuffing his face again.

Kayla still hiding from my camera, and Hannah posing in her own way.

My morning Shellie picture.  No coffee, just syrup.

After breakfast it was time for the morning devotional.

John and Rosy going through the material.  John is having a hoot here.

The morning leadership session to make sure everyone's on the same page.

The rooms are slowly getting more messy.  Farther down you'll see even messier rooms....this is a girls room, but the boys....man....!!!

Good Morning Fontana.  Always the chipper one.  You brighten up my day.

Jacob adding a warm fuzzy to someone's mailbox...could it be mine?

Today we began our work sites.  Our group went to the downtown Winnipeg Biz.  They clean up the downtown streets and make sure people are safe.

Here we are being introduced to Ed, from Covenant church, who works for the Biz.  A nice guy.

We all got uniforms and headed out with garbage picking tools.

Kyle got very good at this very quickly and he loved it.

Kayla did a great job too, but it was HOT.  Thankfully the building offered us some shade.

Our break in the shade.

We split up into two groups. Here's Amy and Leah working in the other group.

Amy had a good time and even came up with a game to help pass the time away as they were picking the garbage.

We discovered that a lot of people smoke in the downtown of Winnipeg, and if anything is found, it is simply thrown away.

Another group went to the Winnipeg Bibles for Missions.  Jovita sorted through piles of shoes.

And clothing.

And cutlery.  Lots of cutlery.

The final group went to Park Manor, a senior's residence.

They played indoor bowling and sang songs together.  John is hamming it up again, as usual.

After work sites it was lunch time.

Then it was time to travel to Prairie Dog Central and board the train for a 40 minute train ride across the prairie.  We took our small group material with us to do during the break as the train engine was moved.

Jovita and Shellie sharing some fun times on the train.

Fayth and Pastor Ken relaxing just before departure.

Kyle enjoyed the train ride almost as much as he enjoys this kind of antic when I take pictures.  Megan seems unaware, as usual.

A panoramic of the 100 year old train car that we were in.

The Canola fields that have been planted in Manitoba.  Many a field lays bare because of the floods.

Bill, our historical guide,  hanging out with Hank.

Seems the ride got the better of Jovita and Shellie.

Kayla and Rosy doing.....what are they doing?  : )

Jerry getting his rest.  We must be working him too hard.

One of my better moments.

At our stop, we did the small group time.  It sure was hot under that tin roof.

 Kyle is having fun.

The train coming back into the station with the engine on the other end.  It's a nice old train.

After the train came back we were able to get our freezies off the train and cool off a bit. John was REALLY happy to get his.

A nice picture of Kyle.

Rosy once again in the blog  (take notice Peter).  Again that glow about her, and her wonderful smile.  As a side note, I just wanted to say that you are AMAZING Rosy.  It's been neat to watch you interact with John so far.  I see a neat relationship forming, and it just brings a smile to my face.  Keep it up.

John and Kim enjoying the ride back.

Speaking of Rosy and John, this is a game that John started.  He stole Rosy's nose, and they kept the game going with other antics.

Just a nice picture of Leah.  You too have been a joy to watch through SERVE.  You are a newbie as a mentor, but you'd never know it.  Neat to watch.

We drove back to the church, and prepared to take showers  (YAHOO!! )   As we were waiting, Fayth and I invented a new game....who can twist the other's neck around the farthest without ripping it off our heads.....rest assured Ben and Laurie, no one was hurt during this experiment....I just got a good headache out of it.

After our wonderful showers it was dinner time.  Taco salad.

I took my camera out to take my usual eating pictures, and Jerry decided to start laughing hysterically about nothing...he's weird...and fits in well here.

More eating pictures....oh, notice Jacob at the end there...he's not tired Tammy, it was just bad timing.

Annette came back today to visit with us.  Amy sashayed up beside her to enjoy dinner time with her.

Megan doing her usual eating routine.  Gross.

Amy decided to try some raspberries, but didn't like them very much.

Worship time began at 6:30 once again.

Kyle and Amy and Leah took to worshiping using flags.

Kyle enjoying his guitar.

Once again Shellie wowed us with her gift in public speaking.  I keep saying I wouldn't do a SERVE without her, and once again she reminds me why.  AMAZING stuff.

She gets everyone involved in the talk.  Here are Fayth and Jovita helping her out.  We discovered that it takes faith in Jesus to connect us to God, and coincidentally Fayth was up there too.

Here was a road block that needed to be passed using paper clips.  The solution to it proved to be a challenge for Shellie.  It didn't quite work.....a bit of humility therapy for her, but she was good with it.

Kyle and Hannah were up next.

Then Kayla.

After Shellie's talk, we ended with worship songs again.  Jovita came up to the stage and simply lived the song that was being played. A joy to watch.

Then it was time for crafts / movie / play time.  It was time to finish off the picture frames from yesterday.  Here's Kalay's.

Our group has been in Winnipeg for 8 days now.  We've done laundry once and it's time to do it again.  Annette will serve us by doing laundry tomorrow.  Here is our stash...

Megan and Fontana get the award for having the most laundry...my goodness...

The boys' rooms are getting rank.  It's amazing how three of them can make such a big mess.

This looks more like an organized mess.

The group finishing off their frames...and Megan and Fontana being strange again.

After the craft time there was supposed to be a movie, but everyone ended up playing games, and hide and seek, instead.  Here's a good game of Uno going on.

And Jenga......

And others were shown John's mustang cars, and a picture of his sisters.

I liked the cars  (and am craving the sour keys in the bag as well)

Now this picture is just down right cute......  I can just imagine what Amber is saying to Kyle....can you?

Then there's Fontana....enough said.

John and Rosy hamming it up.

And to end the night, we have our wonderful night hawks.  They will spend the evening awake so we can sleep in peace.......

And so ends another long, hot, and enjoyable day.  Hannah's comments kind of got half erased, so she'll finish them off  and publish them tomorrow.   Sorry about that Hannah.
