Greetings again to all of you who are following our Learning Opportunity.
Today is Day 6.
Thursday
A better day : )
It starts at 7:30 a.m. each morning with me coming down the stairs and hearing the chatter of leaders mostly : )
And, yes, Tia's smiling face.
Makes my day!
Our cooks have been up for a while already getting breakfast ready for us.
We couldn't do this trip without them.
Jason had devotions this morning. And then it was breakfast time, and then time to head out to our jobs.
We had 4 different places today, and all of them took the day to complete.
This is where Chris' team went. I will confess I don't know what they all were doing, but I'll do my best. Those that went are playing volleyball.
This is underneath the home I think.
Lots of muck to get out.
And other debris.
I'm not sure what's happening here : )
Mucking isn't really the most fun job in the world.
The flood waters pushed over the hot water tank.
Chris put it back where it belongs, and it will need some fittings before it can be used again.
Again, not sure what's happening here.
The inside of the home needed cleaning up as well.
More pics of Chris' group, but I'm not sure what they are put to.
Jason and Jess' group were at a new site today.
Putting IN insulation and then drywall, among other things.
Like yard work.
A view of the home.
More yard work.
It looks like Ethan got to use the pressure washer.
And there were dogs to pay attention to.
Garbage to get rid of.
But Jason isn't driving his own car....hmmmm : )
insulation and drywall to put in.
Lots of it.
Interesting Pic : )
That might be Sam, but I can't be sure : )
Apparently there was a stream nearby and some went fishing : )
Group shot.
I heard they caught some minnows : )
Cutting the insulation to fit.
Drywalling.
I'm not quite sure what Eben is doing here?
Another group shot.
And some serious fishing going on.
There will be more work to do here tomorrow.
Cor's group continued with laying the floor for a sweet lady.
There is a shortage of supplies around here because everyone is wanting flooring and insulation and drywall. It will be an interesting summer for those coming here to help rebuild homes.
But Cor improvised using a couple of different floor patterns : )
The group worked hard today.
Vaccuming of the floor needs to be done before the glue can go down. Holden is doing a fine job.
Some pics of them doing a great job.
Our group went to Brittany's home.
A nice home, but a home that was under a couple of feet of water not just 3 weeks ago.
This is lunch time, but it gives you an idea of the house.
This home was purchased by Brittany and her husband a couple of years ago. Before that she was in another home that flooded almost to the rooftop.
Her mom came to see what we were doing and shared with us frightening stories of that flood and almost losing her daughter to the flood waters.
She cried as she saw what we were doing. She was very thankful.
That makes it all worthwhile.
They have set up a temp house behind their house as their home is rebuilt.
Our task was to basically gut the inside of the home. Two bedrooms with pannelling to come off.
As well as drywall to come off 4 feet up, but all the way to the ceiling in some places.
Annika getting right to work.
It seems that Alex is a bit too strong. He broke the hammer handle in half.
Marika tackles the drywall.
Not an easy task when the cutter you are using isn't quite the right tool.
We kept at the drywall for quite some time.
A kitchen island with a dishwasher needed to come out.
Petra worked on that.
Nice wood flooring needed to come off as it was soaked.
We needed to basically destroy the island, though we kept the marble top.
Claudia starting to take the flooring up in the other bedroom.
Drywall removal continued.
This is the floor removal of the other room.
The subfloor basically disintegrated as the wood floor came off. It was the only thing holding the floor up.
A scary thought.
At lunch I took a couple of progress pics.
The one room with the subfloor exposed and all the panelling off.
The other room almost done.
And yes, I worked today : )
The kitchen getting drywall removed.
Cute shot.
We made a big mess, but we cleaned it up as well.
Lunch time!!
After lunch and another break we tackled the main room oak floor. Using roofing shovels we were able to lift them off pretty good, but it was hard work.
Well not for Claudia. She put me to shame.
The floor starts to come off. The sub floor seems in better shape now.
At the end of the day we got all the rooms done and 1/2 the floor in the main room.
Tomorrow we finish that off and the kitchen floor needs to come off as well.
After work discussions on what happened at each site
happen.
And playing cards
Tonight we had hamburgers.
Yummy.
Matt only set the fire alarm off twice. : )
Supper time!
And then reflection time.
Rohan getting a well-deserved rest.
Reflection time was more positive today. : )
A couple in the group have gone to see people we did work for last year.
The rest is playing volleyball as it gets dark, or taking walks or just relaxing.
Time for me to shower and plan for the last day here in David, Kentucky.
It will be a shorter post tomorrow, I think.
Thanks for reading along.
